Beck Shaw Day

March 5 @ 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

The fifteenth annual Becky Shaw Ski Day will be held at Mt. Abram on Thursday, March 8,2018. Mt. Abram will donate “Becky” lift ticket proceeds to the Paraoptometric Education Fund. Jewel and Donnie will present music and song in the Loose Boots Lounge from 3 to 6pm. Bradly Wilson will return to entertain during intermissions.

Rebecca Keniston Shaw was born and raised in Bethel, Maine. She,her twin Rachel, and their sister Martha began skiing when Mt. Abram consisted of a single slope served by a 1000 foot T-bar and their father was one of the parents who hauled gasoline in five-gallon cans to power the engine that ran the single lift on Barker Mountain at Sunday River. Becky was educated at Gould Academy and University of Maine at Farmington. After working and studying in St. Louis and Chicago, she moved to Boston where she and her husband Lennie met.  They moved to Bethel, opened an optometric office and built a home on a woodlot Becky found. When her twins, Jon and Jeni were six, with three years’ experience on cross country gear (Lennie was in a “Nordic nerd” phase), she took them to Mt. Abram for their introduction to alpine skiing. In due time they joined their dad on the ski school and led the development of its snowboard department.

Becky was killed  on a Monday in March 2003. In response to expressions of concern and queries from the optometric community, Lennie, mindful of Becky’s strong advocacy for paraoptometrics, suggested that the Board of Directors of the Maine Optometric Association create a memorial fund dedicated to furthering paraoptometric education. On Wednesday, at an emergency meeting, the Board did so. Thursday, many family members and friends skied together, reminisced, and spoke of meeting so annually. Saturday evening, following a torchlight parade dedicated to Becky, a large group gathered in the Mt. Abram base lodge in celebration of Becky’s life. At its conclusion Bud Brennon announced that Susan Burns and her husband Josh, owners of Mt. Abram, had decided to establish an annual Becky Shaw Ski Day, with ticket sales proceeds donated to the Rebecca J. Shaw Paraoptometric Education Fund. Jewel Clark and Donnie Katlin offered to provide apres-ski entertainment in the lounge and have continued to do so. The event was quite successful and has become an annual tradition at Mt. Abram.
